Pastoral Counseling with pastor Nicole Schaller

Navigate Personal and Professional Challenges with Wisdom and Grace

What is pastoral counseling for entrepreneurs?

Pastoral counseling is a Christ-centered approach to addressing life’s challenges, rooted in biblical wisdom and the power of the Holy Spirit. It’s designed for Christians seeking to align their lives and work more closely with God’s will and navigate personal and professional challenges through biblical principles and God’s grace.

Pastoral counseling has three vital goals to guide you toward Christ that he may become center of your life:

Proclaiming the Gospel of the forgiveness of sins: At its heart, pastoral counseling involves proclaiming the gospel in a personal conversation, consistently bringing you back to Christ and His victory. It’s not merely about offering advice in moments of difficulty but about helping you acknowledge God’s lordship in every area of your life. The aim is to lead you to move from seeking counsel to embracing God’s commandments, from discomfort to confession, and from doubting or accusing God to seeking His will.

Fostering Christ-likeness and holiness: The goal of pastoral care is to help you grow in Christ-likeness and holiness by the grace of God. As a pastoral counselors, I am assisting in the work of sanctification of the Holy Spirit—encouraging a deeper love for God and neighbor. My role is to bind you to the Word and Spirit of Christ, guiding you to encounter Christ directly and renew your heart in true righteousness.

Providing spiritual guidance in the new life: The new life in Christ demands a new way of living, distinct from the past and from the surrounding world; pastoral counseling serves to guide you on this path. Pastoral counseling seeks to connect you and your human experience with Jesus Christ, not just as the true Counselor, a teacher and model for ethical living and servant leadership, but also as your Savior. This way, you are freed from the burden to save yourself and self-actualize by your own standards, and are led to embrace the saving reality accomplished through Jesus Christ.

In pastoral counseling, we acknowledge God’s presence in our lives and in the counseling relationship. We pray to invite the Holy Spirit in for guidance. And we go to the Bible for biblical wisdom and godly counsel. Instead of providing you with best practices that worked for other people or referring you back to yourself, pastoral counseling helps you to connect with the one true source for personal change and growth, our Lord Jesus Christ.

“I tell you the truth, whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven. I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything they ask, my Father in heaven will do it for them. For where two or three gather in my name, I am there among them.”

Jesus in Matthew 18:19-20

Who benefits from pastoral counseling?

At the intersection between the church and the startup community, pastor Nicole Schaller has developed this Pastoral Counseling for Christian entrepreneurs to address the specific challenges of startup founders and seasoned entrepreneurs. By applying biblical counsel to the context of entrepreneurship, leadership, and work, this pastoral counseling is designed to speak into your situation as an entrepreneur.

Pastoral counseling for entrepreneurs is ideal for:

  • Kingdom entrepreneurs who want to put God first in their life and activity, and who seek spiritual guidance, how to do so.
  • Entrepreneurs who aim to discern God’s will for their life, gain clarity on their calling and vocation, and foster a kingdom perspective for their enterprise.
  • Mature disciples who wish to grow spiritually in this season and explore how God is using this activity to work on them, including failures and setbacks.
  • Business owners who have a well-developed relationship with God, but particularly depend on trusting in God’s providence and provision in their entrepreneurial endeavor, that he’s already at work where they are moving into
  • Servant leaders desiring to grow in Christ-likeness, and develop servant leadership motivated by our identity in Christ and servanthood, to love people by serving them
  • Anyone who wants to work on their important relationships with cofounders, team members and family members that are strained by the entrepreneurial activity.
  • Vigilant workers who struggle to put their faith into practice in the context of the secular business, and seeking biblical guidance on work related issues.
  • Faithful stewards who seek to discern and develop their spiritual gifts, hone their talents and invest the resources wisely that God has entrusted them.
  • Innovators and creators, who are eager to explore their creative side in the image of God, and their creation mandate.

While these work and leadership related topics may occasion the counseling, pastoral counseling is for you as a whole person; so we will consider your spiritual journey as you are undertaking your entrepreneurial journey. Pastoral counseling for entrepreneurs provides you with biblical counsel, spiritual guidance and pastoral support for your professional and personal challenges.

What are the transformation goals in pastoral counseling?

Pastoral counsel is a biblical counsel designed to accompany your spiritual, personal, and professional development in your entrepreneurial and leadership journey.

Let me draw from the imagery of Psalm 1 to illustrate the transformation goals in pastoral counseling. Psalm 1 exhorts us to walk in the way of righteousness, avoiding getting stuck in destructive human habits because our choices shape us over time. Instead, we are to meditate on God’s instruction and wisdom until it becomes a part of us, we live by it, and it guides all our choices. Then we become like a tree bearing fruit in season. Everything we do, or work on, prospers. This way we are successful for ourselves and others, tasting the abundant and blessed life of God. Pastoral counseling is about helping you to walk in the way of righteousness in your life and work, making wise choices along the way that reinforce your path.

In a growth-oriented pastoral counseling, my goal as a pastor is to help you:

  1. Choose the path of righteousness: Seek God’s will for your life, allowing him to shape the desires of your heart. Learn to make choices that keep you on God’s intended path, guided by His Word and Spirit.
  2. Avoid the way of the wicked: Overcome destructive habits that are holing you back, and learn to recognize and resist ungodly influences and temptations that lead you astray from God’s path.
  3. Plant your roots by the Living Water: Build a strong spiritual foundation by meditating on God’s Word and listening to the Holy Spirit to be nourished from its timeless wisdom and to face life’s challenges with faith and confidence.
  4. Navigate life’s crossroads: Gain wisdom and cultivate discernment to make God-honoring decisions at every turn in your personal and professional life, ensuring that your life and work reflect integrity and purpose.
  5. Cultivate righteous habits: Develop daily practices that shape your Christ-like character and draw you closer to God. Consistently align your thoughts, actions, and decisions with the truth of Scripture, building your faith, obedience and perseverance, enabling you to withstand life’s storms.
  6. Bear fruit in season: Redefine productivity and success as Christ-like character and a kingdom perspective, seeking to eternally impact others and make them prosper. Experience personal growth and leadership development as you apply biblical principles to your life and enterprise, and develop the fruit of the Spirit, your talents and spiritual gifts to serve others.
  7. Find your true identity in Christ: Understand who you are in Christ and live out your God-given purpose. Form a strong, Christ-centered identity, walking out your entrepreneurial endeavor with humility and courage in the light of the cross and the victory of Christ.

What to expect in pastoral counseling?

In Pastoral Counseling, we will have regular one-on-one sessions, where conversations around your personal and professional challenges as well as your growth goals are central. Between sessions, you will engage in counseling exercises designed to help you practice biblical principles in your personal and professional life, and form new habits. As your pastoral counselor, I will listen, ask reflective questions, help you consult the Bible for godly counsel and discern the leading of the Holy Spirit in your life and in your entrepreneurial endeavor.

We enter into our counseling conversations under the premises of the work of Christ, the work of the Holy Spirit, and the biblical change process:

The work of Christ: Your foundation for true change

Before we dive into the counseling process, I want you to understand the wonderful work that Jesus Christ has already done for you that is the basis of your transformation:

  • Jesus lived the perfect life you could never live, fulfilling all of God’s righteous requirements on your behalf.
  • He died on the cross, taking the punishment for your sins so that you could be forgiven and reconciled to God.
  • Christ rose victorious over sin, death, and the devil, securing eternal life for all who believe in Him.
  • He ascended to heaven and now sits at the right hand of the Father, interceding for you constantly.

Your salvation and the righteousness you desperately need has already been earned by Christ. The victory over your deepest struggles has already been won. In pastoral counseling, we’re not trying to achieve these things — we’re learning to live in the reality of what Jesus has already accomplished!

The Holy Spirit: Your ever-present Counselor

Your most important Counselor in this journey of change is the Holy Spirit. If you’re a believer in Christ, the Spirit is already dwelling within you, actively working to transform you. Here’s how the Holy Spirit is at work:

  • Conforming you into the image of Christ
  • Illuminating Scripture, helping you understand and apply God’s Word
  • Enabling you to understand Jesus’ teachings, the Holy Spirit is the true Counselor
  • Empowering you to obey God’s commands and resist temptation
  • Convicting you of sin and righteousness, guiding you towards truth
  • Producing spiritual fruit in your life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control
  • Comforting you in times of need and interceding for you in prayer

In our counseling sessions, we’ll pray to invite the Spirit in and learn to recognize and cooperate with the Spirit’s work to model you into the image of Christ. As a human counselor, I humbly acknowledge that I am assisting in an ongoing process of sanctification. God is already at work in your life, and you are not alone in this change process!

The biblical change process: Putting off and putting on

At the heart of biblical pastoral counseling is the transformative process described in Ephesians 4:22-24:

You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

This process involves:

  • Identifying and “putting off” sinful patterns, thoughts, and behaviors that are holding you back.
  • Renewing your mind through the truth of Scripture, prayer as conversation with God, and discerning and following the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
  • “Putting on” Christ-like responses to life’s challenges.
  • Developing new, godly habits that reflect your identity in Christ.
  • Growing in your understanding of your identity in Christ and God’s incredible love for you.

In our pastoral counseling sessions, we will:

  1. Assess your current path: Identify the areas of your life and work where you’ve wandered off the path of righteousness, or need spiritual guidance.
  2. Identify crossroads: Recognize the key decisions in your life and work where biblical wisdom must be applied, ensuring your choices lead you closer to God.
  3. Apply biblical wisdom to your specific situation: Consult the Bible for biblical wisdom and godly counsel to ground yourself in scriptural truths, discerning God’s direction for your life and entrepreneurial activity.
  4. Put off the old self: Confront old worldly habits, thoughts, and behaviors that pull you away from God’s path, replacing them with biblical alternatives.
  5. Put on the new self in Christ: Embrace new, Christ-centered ways of thinking and acting, shaped by Christ’s teachings and the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
  6. Cultivate godly habits: Develop daily practices that reinforce your walk on the path of righteousness, making godly choices a natural part of your identity.
  7. Work on your relationships to move toward responding well to challenging situations or relationships, seeking forgiveness and reconciliation.
  8. Regularly reflect and adjust: Continuously evaluate your progress, making necessary adjustments to grow deeper in your relationship with God.
